5 Steps to Staying Cool this Summer

Your spring cleaning efforts may be wrapping up, but there are other chores that should be included in your springtime routine. Temperatures are going up, and you can expect your energy costs to rise as well. Your heating and cooling systems account for over 50 percent of your energy costs in your home, and an unmaintained system can mean your bill may be higher than normal. Not only will proper maintenance of these systems keep them working efficiently and save you money on your energy bills, it could prevent a total system failure which could cost you thousands.

Here are a 5 things to do now to ensure you stay cool this summer.

  1. Routinely replace your air filters. If your unit uses a washable air filter, make sure to regularly wash it. A dirty air filter can drastically lower your efficiency and cost you an additional 5-15% on your energy bills.
  2. Clean you’re A/C’s evaporator coil every year.
  3. Check your coil fins annually and straighten any bent fins with a fin comb.
  4. For split systems, clean out debris such as dust and leaves from your fan, condenser, and compressor.
  5. Clean your unit’s drain channels with a stiff wire to loosen any clogs that may be forming.

When in doubt, hire a certified professional to have your unit deep cleaned. The price range for this service depending on your system is $60-$120.
