Be sure to check the weather forecast for your move-in day. If you live in a tropical area such as Honolulu, you may not want to move on a day when the weatherman is calling for a torrential downpour.
Moving day can be particularly hectic for children and pets, so be sure to make arrangements with baby sitters and friends whenever possible.
Once you have your movers scheduled and your storage unit reserved, it’s time to acquire supplies. Remember that moving always takes longer and costs more than you think. Set aside funds for moving supplies — tape, bubble wrap, boxes of various sizes and packing paper. Depending on the size of your move, you may want to rent moving blankets and dollies as well.
Place labels on each box and designate a necessities box, a kids’ box and a pets’ box. I find it helpful to label every box according to the room where its contents correspond (kitchen, master bedroom). As a rule, you can never have enough labels.
When packing, put your heaviest boxes on the bottom of the moving truck and place the lighter items on top.
Also, remember to contact the utility and service providers at your new home. You don’t want to find yourself living in a home without power and air conditioning.
